Creating a double bed frame with storage is a rewarding project that combines functionality with aesthetics. Whether you're seeking extra storage for your belongings or simply want a stylish and practical centerpiece for your bedroom, this guide will provide you with the essential steps to achieve your goal.
Essential Tools and Materials
- Pine or poplar lumber: 8-foot boards (2x12, 2x6, 2x4)

Begin by cutting the following pieces from 2x6 lumber:
- 4 long side rails (75 inches)
- 4 short side rails (54 inches)
Use pocket holes to join the long and short side rails together, creating two rectangular frames.
Step 2: Constructing the Headboard and Footboard
For a simple headboard and footboard, follow these steps:
Headboard:
- Cut two pieces from 2x12 lumber (60 inches long)
- Cut two pieces from 2x4 lumber (36 inches long)
- Assemble using pocket holes and wood glue
Footboard:
- Cut two pieces from 2x12 lumber (54 inches long)
- Cut two pieces from 2x4 lumber (36 inches long)
- Assemble using pocket holes and wood glue
Step 3: Attaching Headboard and Footboard
Position the headboard and footboard vertically against the side rails. Use wood screws to secure them in place.
Step 4: Building the Slat Support
Cut several pieces of 2x4 lumber to fit across the side rails, spaced evenly apart. These will support the mattress slats.
Step 5: Creating the Storage Drawers (Optional)
For added storage, you can build drawers that fit beneath the bed frame.
Drawer Sides and Back:
- Cut pieces from 2x6 lumber (72 inches long for sides, 54 inches long for back)
- Join using pocket holes and wood glue
Drawer Bottom:
- Cut a piece of plywood or MDF (72 x 54 inches)
- Attach to the drawer sides and back using wood glue and nails
Drawer Front:
- Cut a piece from 2x12 lumber (54 inches long)
- Attach to the drawer using wood glue and screws
Drawer Installation:
- Install drawer slides on the side rails
- Insert drawers into the slides
Step 6: Finishing
Sand any rough edges and apply your desired finish. This can include paint, stain, or a clear wood sealant.
Step 7: Assembly
Place the slat support across the side rails and secure with wood screws.
Position the mattress slats on the slat support.
