How To Make Under Bed Storage Drawers
Under-bed storage drawers are an excellent way to add more storage space to your bedroom without taking up valuable floor space. They're perfect for storing seasonal items, bulky linens, or anything else you don't need to access frequently. And best of all, they're surprisingly easy to make.
Materials You'll Need
- 1/2-inch plywood or MDF
- 1x4 pine boards
- 2x4 pine boards
- Wood screws
- Wood glue
- Drawer slides
- Casters (optional)
Tools You'll Need
- Circular saw or miter saw
- Drill
- Countersink bit
- Clamps
- Measuring tape
- Pencil
Instructions
1. Cut the plywood to size. The first step is to cut the plywood to size. The size of the plywood will depend on the size of your bed. For a standard twin bed, you'll need a piece of plywood that is 39 inches wide by 75 inches long. For a full-size bed, you'll need a piece of plywood that is 54 inches wide by 75 inches long. And for a queen-size bed, you'll need a piece of plywood that is 60 inches wide by 80 inches long. 2. Assemble the frame. Once you have the plywood cut to size, you can assemble the frame. The frame is made from 1x4 pine boards. Cut four 1x4s to a length of 39 inches (for a twin bed), 54 inches (for a full-size bed), or 60 inches (for a queen-size bed). Then, cut two 1x4s to a length of 75 inches (for a twin or full-size bed) or 80 inches (for a queen-size bed). To assemble the frame, first attach the two long 1x4s to the two short 1x4s using wood glue and screws. Then, attach the remaining two short 1x4s to the frame, again using wood glue and screws. 3. Attach the drawer slides. Once the frame is assembled, you can attach the drawer slides. The drawer slides are what will allow the drawers to slide in and out of the frame. To attach the drawer slides, first measure and mark the center of each side of the frame. Then, attach the drawer slides to the frame using wood screws. 4. Build the drawers. The next step is to build the drawers. The drawers are made from 1/2-inch plywood. Cut four pieces of plywood to a length of 39 inches (for a twin bed), 54 inches (for a full-size bed), or 60 inches (for a queen-size bed). Then, cut two pieces of plywood to a width of 18 inches (for a twin bed), 24 inches (for a full-size bed), or 28 inches (for a queen-size bed). To assemble the drawers, first attach the two long pieces of plywood to the two short pieces of plywood using wood glue and screws. Then, attach the bottom to the drawer using wood glue and screws. 5. Attach the casters (optional). If you want your drawers to be mobile, you can attach casters to the bottom. To do this, simply drill four holes in the bottom of each drawer, and then insert the casters into the holes. 6. Finish the drawers. Once the drawers are assembled, you can finish them to your liking. You can paint them, stain them, or cover them with fabric.Tips
- If you're not sure what size drawers you need, measure the space under your bed. The drawers should be at least 1 inch shorter than the height of the space under your bed.
- You can use any type of wood you like to make your drawers, but plywood is a good option because it's strong and affordable.
- If you're having trouble attaching the drawer slides, you can use a drill to create pilot holes.
- You can add dividers to the drawers to help organize your belongings.
