How to Build a Single Bed with Storage

Building your own single bed with storage is a great way to save money and get exactly the bed you want. It's also a fun and rewarding project that can be completed in a weekend.

To build a single bed with storage, you will need the following materials:

  • 1 sheet of 3/4-inch plywood (48 inches x 96 inches)
  • 2 sheets of 1/2-inch plywood (48 inches x 24 inches)
  • 4 pieces of 2x4 lumber (8 feet long)
  • 8 pieces of 2x2 lumber (8 feet long)
  • 16 wood screws (2-1/2 inches long)
  • 8 wood screws (1-1/2 inches long)
  • Wood glue
  • Sandpaper
  • Paint or stain (optional)

Once you have gathered your materials, you can begin building your bed.

Step 1: Cut the plywood.

Use a saw to cut the 3/4-inch plywood into the following pieces:

  • 2 pieces (48 inches x 24 inches) for the headboard and footboard
  • 4 pieces (48 inches x 12 inches) for the side rails

Cut the 1/2-inch plywood into the following pieces:

  • 2 pieces (24 inches x 24 inches) for the drawer fronts
  • 2 pieces (24 inches x 12 inches) for the drawer sides
  • 2 pieces (12 inches x 12 inches) for the drawer backs

Step 2: Assemble the headboard and footboard.

Apply wood glue to the edges of the two headboard pieces. Align the pieces and clamp them together. Screw the pieces together using 2-1/2-inch wood screws. Repeat this process to assemble the footboard.

Step 3: Assemble the side rails.

Apply wood glue to the edges of the two side rail pieces. Align the pieces and clamp them together. Screw the pieces together using 2-1/2-inch wood screws.

Step 4: Attach the headboard and footboard to the side rails.

Apply wood glue to the top edges of the side rails. Align the headboard with the top edge of one of the side rails and clamp it in place. Screw the headboard to the side rail using 2-1/2-inch wood screws. Repeat this process to attach the footboard to the other side rail.

Step 5: Build the drawers.

Apply wood glue to the edges of the drawer front, sides, and back. Assemble the drawer and clamp it together. Screw the pieces together using 1-1/2-inch wood screws.

Step 6: Install the drawers.

Measure the distance between the inside edges of the side rails. Cut two pieces of 2x4 lumber to this length. These pieces will be the drawer supports.

Attach the drawer supports to the inside edges of the side rails using wood screws. The drawer supports should be flush with the top edge of the side rails.

Place the drawers on the drawer supports. The drawers should slide in and out easily.

Step 7: Sand and finish the bed.

Sand the bed to smooth any rough edges. You can then paint or stain the bed to your desired finish.

Congratulations! You have now built your own single bed with storage.
